Summary
Built in 1907 on what used to be the site of Oakland’s original Chinatown, the century-old San Pablo Hotel was originally known as the Hotel Arcade. In the 1930s, the Hotel Arcade was one of the highest quality hotel in Oakland that welcomed Black Americans. However, over the next several decades, the hotel and the surrounding area experienced a decline. The Hotel San Pablo was the site of repeated police raids and was delapidated by the time of the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake. After the earthquake, the building was boarded up and its residents were relocated. Renovations by a developer were stalled in the early 90s, and Eden Housing and EBALDC stepped in to complete the remaining 15% of rehabilitation work. In 1996, the San Pablo re-opened as a senior residential community with 144 single rooms (SRO with shared baths and private baths) for persons aged 55 years and older. Center for Elders Independence (CEI), which occupies part of the first floor and the mezzanine, provides community-based healthcare services to older adults, and EBALDC Resident Services are provided to all tenants. The expansive lobby area is a community space for residents to watch television, meet with friends, or play piano.
SAN PABLO HOTEL IS CURRENTLY ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS FOR THE WAITING LIST.
