Summary

The Oak Park Apartments project represents the renovation and reconfiguration of 56 one-bedroom units into 35 one, two, three, and four bedroom units. It represents the culmination of a community organizing struggle in partnership with New Hope Covenant Church to address the severely distressed conditions of the complex and its predominantly Central and Southeast Asian immigrant residents.

The project addressed construction deficiencies as well as alleviated the overcrowded conditions experienced by the multi-generational families that lived in the complex. The phasing of the construction process allowed many of the families to remain in place and transfer to new units after the completion of the first phase. The renovation transformed the former “motel” aesthetic and created a stronger residential design.

Oak Park Apartments features a basketball court, community garden, and a community building with a multi-purpose room, residential kitchen, computer room, and management office.
