A rare display of traditional Filipino weapons such as bolos, kris, spears, knives and eskrima sticks will be on exhibit at the Asian Resource Gallery April thru May, 2006. A special reception featuring a martial arts demonstration and the collections of martial arts practitioners Braulio Agudelo, Brady Brazil and Roman Abad is scheduled Thursday, April 20th, 6pm at the gallery.
Reflecting an ancient and complex history of Pacific and Pan-Asian intersections, Philippine culture boasts a proud tradition of self-determination and self-defense of its national identity. The unique martial arts that evolved in the Philippines is inseparable from the quest for independence, tribal sovereignty, and resistance against colonialism. This exhibition is sponsored by the East Bay Asian Local Development Corporation in collaboration with Filipinos for Affirmative Action, East Bay Pilipino Organizing Project, and EastSide Arts Alliance.
Gallery hours are Mon thru Fri 9am-6pm.
