Generaciones 4 Generations

- The Art of the Nevel Family

Paintings, murals, masks, and mixed media represent four generations of the Nevel Family, longtime residents of the Fruitvale District (now spanning throughout Oakland and the Bay Area), are on display at the Asian Resource Gallery in Oakland Chinatown.

Beginning with the popular mural paintings of Raymundo Nevel, popularly known as “Zala”, the tradition was carried on mostly by his daughter Xochitl, with contributions from her niece Crystal, nephew Zach, husband Roberto and other family members. The work reflected the rise of progressive Chicano and Indio consciousness of the 60s & 70s. But visual art and cultural production ran throughout the Nevel clan and continues through their generations, experimenting with multiple creative media and themes.

The exhibit runs from August thru September, with a special reception on Thursday, August 21st, 2008, beginning at 6PM and is FREE to the public. The Asian Resource Gallery is located at 310 Eighth Street (@Harrison St.) in Oakland, and hours are Mon-Fri, 9AM to 6PM. For more information, contact Greg Jung Morozumi at 510/532-9692.

The Asian Resource Gallery is a project of East Bay Asian Local Development Corporation (EBALDC)
