The Black Panthers
Photographs by Stephen Shames & posters from the archives of Alden Kimbrough
On Thursday, November 16, 2006 from 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM. Our special guest speaker for the evening will be Chairman of the Black Panther Party, Bobby Seale. There will be autographed posters and refreshments.
The exhibit commemorates the 40th Anniversary of the Black Panther Party for Self-Defense featuring candid photography and posters. The exhibit depicts the early years of rallies, community Survival Programs, confrontations with the press and police, incarcerations, funerals, and even private moments.
The Black Panther party which existed from 1966 to 1982, went through many growing pains and transitions while simultaneously advocating Black self-determination and multinational coalitions. It ultimately met its demise both from internal strife and external state repression, but emerges victorious in history’s broader perspective on the continuum of African American liberation and resistance movements.
