A traveling exhibit of posters created by thirty Filipino artists from the Philippines and the United States is now at the Asian Resource Gallery (310 Eighth St./ Harrison in Oakland Chinatown). The exhibition title, FACTSHEET: Activism is NOT a Crime draws inspiration from the one-sheet fliers circulated by human rights tracking agencies in the Philippines whenever breaches of fundamental civil liberties occur.

Recent elections in the Philippines highlight the corruption, violence and intimidation that are employed to maintain a small elite’s power over a vastly impoverished majority population. Filipino Americans from the Bay Area have joined a delegation to monitor national elections, while communities here and local press have anxiously kept vigilant watch.

Many of the posters and accompanying text document incidents of military abuse of political activists, opposition candidates, students, church leaders, lawyers, journalists and civilians who have questioned the current regime. There have been multiple cases of extra-judicial killings, torture, arbitrary detentions and disappearances, which have impacted the status of Filipino communities across the globe.

Artists/ curators LianLadia and Con Cabrera from Filipino cultural activist collectives in the U.S. (KwatroKantos) and the Philippines (ARREST) initiated this project, which is traveling to different cities across the globe.
